Dos & Don’ts of Packing Your Home For Sale

When preparing to sell your home, packing can be an important step to make your move easier and help showcase your home to potential buyers. Here are some dos and don’ts of packing a home for sale:

Dos:

  1. Start packing early: Starting to pack early can help you avoid feeling overwhelmed and rushed as your move-out date approaches.
  2. Declutter and organize: Before packing, take the time to declutter and organize your belongings. This can help you identify what you want to keep and what you can sell, donate, or throw away.
  3. Label boxes clearly: Labeling boxes with the contents and the room they belong in can make it easier for movers and for you when you unpack in your new home.
  4. Pack breakables carefully: Use bubble wrap, packing paper, or other cushioning materials to protect breakable items, such as dishes, glassware, and artwork.
  5. Pack a first-day box: Pack a box with essential items you’ll need on your first day in your new home, such as toiletries, a change of clothes, and important documents.

Don’ts:

  1. Overpack boxes: Overpacking boxes can make them heavy and difficult to move. Try to limit the weight of boxes to 30-40 pounds or less.
  2. Forget to check with your movers: If you’re using a moving company, make sure to check with them about any restrictions on packing, such as items they won’t move or special requirements for fragile items.
  3. Leave packing until the last minute: Waiting until the last minute to pack can be stressful and result in items being forgotten or packed improperly.
  4. Pack hazardous materials: Items such as chemicals, paint, and gasoline are hazardous and should not be packed for moving. Check with your mover about how to properly dispose of these items.
  5. Pack items you don’t need: Avoid packing items that you don’t need or want, such as old clothes, outdated electronics, and broken furniture. Consider donating or disposing of these items before you move.

Overall, packing a home for sale can be a big job, but by starting early, decluttering, and packing carefully, you can make the process smoother and help showcase your home to potential buyers.
